Flexible Circuit Boards

Flexible printed circuit boards, also known as flexible printed circuits (FPCs), are a special type of printed circuit board characterized by their flexibility and versatility. They are made of thin, flexible substrate materials, usually polyimide or polyester film, instead of rigid materials such as FR-4 (a glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin).

Features and benefits

  1. Flexibility: they can be bent, twisted or even rolled without impairing functionality.
  2. Space saving: ideal for applications where space is limited, as they allow three-dimensional installations.
  3. Lightweight: the thin materials make them lighter than conventional rigid PCBs.
  4. Reliability: reduce the risk of solder joint breakage due to moving components.
  5. Design freedom: complex and compact designs are possible.

Variants

  1. Single flexible printed circuit boards: for simple connections.
  2. Multilayer flexible printed circuit boards: for more complex designs.
  3. Rigid-flex PCBs: combination of rigid and flexible segments.
